Good For Her Age

What surfing taught me about the art of waiting

Something a little different and more personal for my paid subscribers this week.

I will take another turn around the sun this weekend. I’m going to a Chris Stapleton concert at Fenway Park tonight. I love him, live concerts and summer nights.

On Sunday, my actual birthday, I don’t want to do much. I don’t need anything, and mostly, I’m looking forward to seeing all the kids later this month for a nice celebratory dinner when we are all in the same city at the same time.

What I really want is better waves.

I am still on my surfboard at my age, closer to 60 than 50. It is not uncommon for me to be several decades older than any other woman out on the water. I grew up in L.A. and have always loved the beach. I’ve been on and off a surfboard for decades, but took a big hiatus when the kids were younger. My husband, knowing I was itching to get back on the water, got me a paddleboard for my 45th birthday. After a while, I felt confident enough to get back on my surfboard.

It has taught me a lot more than balance.

But first, I want to be clear: I am not crushing it. You wouldn’t see me in the waves and be like “Oh, she’s got it.” You might say “Good for her age.” I’ll take it. I no longer need to be particularly good at something to love it.
